How does remapping differ from chipping ?

Engine mapping is the modern equivalent of chipping. If you 'chip' a car, you effectively put a chip in that has a set of data already burnt into it, into your ECU. If you remap an ECU you collect the existing data stored on the chip, save it, and overwrite it with the improved performance data. Because you have saved the original data those performance settings can be restored if necessary.
